What is the best way to upgrade iTunes? ...

I'm currently running iTunes 8.0.2.20 to work with my iPod Touch 2G and Nano 4G. All is working quite well so I'm rather hesitant about upgrading. But more and more content is requiring an upgrade to the latest iTunes version. If I decide to take the leap, what is the best route for upgrading, ensuring that my music is not lost and that I can revert back to my current version if something goes wrong? I know to backup my library. I try to do that regularly. Should I uninstall my current version and all other Apple associated programs, download new version and install OR do the upgrade from within my current version of iTunes?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Could not open key UNKNOWN ...

I am having a problem upgrading from iTunes 9.0.07 to 9.0.2. I've been trying to use the 64-bit installer and have tried disabling my anti-virus software.
I had this same problem when I was running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 64-bit on this same computer.
At first, when I would download, I had to Download Only and then install.
When I tried to install iTunes manually, it would load very slowly at Copying Files and then say it was Rolling Back Action. After that, it would say that, "The installer encountered errors before iTunes could be configured."
I tried everything people suggested on help forums, the discussions here, and the Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows help article in Support.
After uninstalling iTunes, making a backup of my iTunes music from Documents and getting rid of anything else iTunes, QuickTime or Apple related, I tried downloading again from the website (using Firefox). I had the problem that iTunes said it couldn't be downloaded without QuickTime. Okay, easy fix, right? I tried downloading and installing QuickTime and these errors came up:

Itunes - Windows 7 Intallation issue ...

I upgraded to Windows 7 from XP last night. Becasue there is no direct upgrade from Win XP to Win 7 I did a new fresh install starting with a new hard drive. The install went fine until I went to install Itunes. Downloaded the latest Itunes and started the install. A good way into the install, I'm getting the following error message:

"An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT,version="8.0.50727.4053",type="win32",publicKeyToken='1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorarchitecture="x86". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT:0x800736FD."

Following this message, the installer reverses the installation process and after a 5-10 minute wait, a screen comes up that says the Itunes installation was complete. Obviously it wasn't but that is what the message says. When you close out of that message, Itunes tries to start and this message pops up:

"Apple Application Support was not found.
Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall itunes, then install iTunes again.
Error 2"

I have uninstalled and retried the installation process multiple times with the exact same result. I have downloaded the installation file from the iTunes website 3 different times and retried each one to make sure that I didn't have a problem with the installation file.

iTunes and Quicktime both show up in the program list but when you click to open them the Application support error message appears.

When looking at the registry Bonjour, iPod, iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Mobile Device Support, and CoreFP all have entries.

Does anybody have any idea on what is going on here? This is getting really frustrating.

I am having trouble upgrading to iTunes 9.0.2

contacting tech support is unfortunately even more long-winded than copying all my music into a new folder, manually deleting all reminents of my old iTunes and then downloading the newest iTunes, so if anyone's got any ideas about what's causing this to happen or any way to fix the problem in a simple way, then all help is greatly appreciated

iTunes 9 install issues, now iTunes ...

I tried to upgrade to iTunes 9 today but it failed to install using the auto-update tool, so as the tool suggested, I tried going manual. It installed, but gave me the "iTunes requires a newer version of Apple Mobile Device Support." error every time I plugged in my iPod Touch, and advised me to uninstall and reinstall iTunes and the Apple Mobile Device Support.

I successfully uninstalled iTunes, though the Apple Mobile Device support is being stubborn, and seems not to uninstall properly, remaining on the list of programs in the control panel.

I tried running both the manual install file (iTunes64Setup.exe) and the extracted AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi, and neither work, even though I have the AMDS service stopped in the Services panel in the control panel. The progress bar sits for a while near the finish and then rolls back, and tells me that there was an error with the install.

The error message says:

Importing music previously ripped by ...

Why is it that importation of music which was previously ripped by RealPlayer does not yield the inclusion of artist and album identifiers? I am tired of RealPlayer loosing tracks, and so want to now use iTunes. However, when I installed iTunes 8.2.0.23, and imported the music already stored on the hard drive of my computer, only the track names were imported. Now, I have 2500 tracks available, but no way to sort them by album name within artist name. That means, all of the first tracks are listed in the library, then all of the second tracks are listed, and this continues for all tracks. Why could iTunes not be designed to first review the file structure (and allow me to intervene) so that the album name and artist name could be included with the track name. My structure is /audio/music/artist/album/track, and I would have expected iTunes to be smart enough that the artist and album information could be copied into the iTunes library listing, along with the track name.

iTunes 32-bit upgrade to iTunes 64-bit ...

Hi there!
I have a question about upgrading iTunes from 32-bit to 64-bit on Windows.
As I always do when I reformat my computer I save my "iTunes Library.itl" files and all those other files, backup my iTunes Music folder etc. Then I re-install iTunes on the new computer and put the iTunes Music folder and the library files back into their places and iTunes works just fine.

My question is this. I'm curently upgrading from Vista 32-bit to Win7 64-bit.
I can probaly keep using iTunes 32-bit in Win7 64-bit but what's the point. I have to make the transition some time anyway. So my question is. Can I do as I always do, install iTunes 32-bit in Win7 64-bit, as my files and then install iTunes 64-bit over the 32-bit installation? Or can a clean iTunes 64-bit installation use my old "iTunes Library.itl" files etc from my 32-bit installation of iTunes?

I hope this makes any sens.

Hello, I had to replace my hard drive off my Vista machine. I was able to save the XML file of each playlist. I installed iTunes 64bit on my Win7 machine, copied all the music back over. Now here is my dilema, I have duplicates of songs and dead link songs in my library. I already have iTunes to copy files when files are added to my iTunes. I also have have iTunes managing the files and folders of my library as well. Now what I didn't realize was at one point I did not have iTunes on my old machine set to copy the files into the iTunes directory when files are added. So my playlists are pointing to old directories instead of one main directory. Is there a way to synchronize the playlist so they can point to the new library directory. I don't want to recreate my playlists. (EEK!) also how can i filter through the duplicates so i can remove the files and also clear track dead links? Thank you

Itune won't uninstall, install, ...

I have a lot of issues with itunes so i'm not really sure where to post, but the main ones are installing and uninstalling.

When i open itunes (version 7.something) i get a message saying it wasn't installed properly and so cannot import music from cd's. When i connect my ipod video another message appears saying itunes wasn't installed properly and so cannot connect/sync to my ipod. Also when i agree to update to version 9 nothing happens, i click update and the message disappears.

It recommended uninstalling and then reinstalling itunes.
However when i go to add/remove programs all the itunes related programs appear (updater. bonjour quicktime etc.) except itunes itself.
So i tried to manually delete the files but when i try to trash the itunes folder it tells me that i do not have access to do that and that they are protected files.
I have tried using registery cleanup programs but that does not get rid of the old itunes files.

I then tried to upgrade to version 9 by downloading the pack from apple website. Everything runs fine until this error message appears -
Error writing to file: H:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\default\pref\itms.js. Verify that you have access to that directory.

Clicking retry just makes the message appear again and cancel undoes the installation.
I have already looked for help on a firefox support forum and they told me i should look for help here.
Please help me.

I am using an admin account and security is avast!on-access scanner and spybot-search and destroy.

I recently got the following error when starting iTunes:

Yes i did recently install nero so that explains the error fine. But my problem is in fixing the error. I've tried many times to reinstall itunes with no luck. I've also tried the repair utility aswell with no luck. Where I'm at now is I've removed nero and all apple products from my pc and have deleted any leftover folders in programfiles and (x86). I've then reinstalled iTunes but once again get the same error on starting iTunes. Is there something in the registry that the itunes uninstaller is missing? Is there an iTunes removal utility that deletes any leftover registry settings?

I tried the repair option when downloading and that didn't work, so I uninstalled everything and started again. Still the same problem.

Updated to itunes 9: now Airtunes ...

I unfortunately do not recall the last version of itunes I had.... it wasn't very old though.

The only reason I updated to 9 last night was the itunes store forced me to in order to get a new episode. Anyways...

after the update, upon starting iTunes, i get this dialogue:

"The software required for communication with this ipod is not installed correctly...."

Then it asks me if I want it to repair. I say yes and it supposedly repairs it. If I restart itunes, it will say this error every single time.

I also cannot connect to my Airpor Express as a speaker output. it is listed, and when I select it, it brings up the 'connecting' dialogue which goes on FOREVER until I cancel it. ***?!?

I've uninstalled itunes, apple application support AND apple mobile device support and reinstalled itunes. I've unplugged the airport express; re-configured it using the Airport utility, updated the firmware and still I have both of these problems after all this.

WHY OH WHY did itunes make my update to download new store episodes...

Can anybody help me diagnose this?

Thanks
Ryan

How to keep library, radio and ...

Seems like almost everytime I upgrade itunes or iphone, I end up losing my library of music, and the radio stations and playlists I've created in the left hand column. It's become a hassle to upgrade and it will become worse when I finish importing my new music collection and set up custom playlists for our household.

Can anyone suggest a way to keep this from happening?

Thanks,

I tried to upgrade my computer from iTunes 8 to 9.0.1 and it froze. I have tried uninstalling both iTunes and QuickTime and then installing again, but without success. It still freezes, right after it downloads the 45MB package. It says "installing" but the progress bar doesn't move at all.

When this happens, all of Windows becomes unresponsive so that I have to manually cut power to my laptop to turn it off.

itunes 9 windows xp x64-bit ...

I'm working on getting itunes 9 to run on Windows XP x64-bit. I managed to get the app running by a little luck. I initially followed the instructions here for itunes 8.x (http://yukichigai.googlepages.com/iphonex64) and it worked ok. I then went in to the 9 installer, lowered the minimum installer to 501 and installed. Boom. iPodService.exe fails. I have itunes 9 running, but only after I removed the service from the installer list. Naturally, I have an iphone and sure would like to get that to work again, but if the service fails, I'm not sure what to do. Anyone out there find a work around for the install that seems to work well?

Unavailable network resource? ...

When I go to update iTunes, I get the following message from Windows Installer:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installer package 'iTunes64.msi' in the box below.

I found the itunes64.msi thing but it still didn't work.

I also get this message when I try to install a new version, update the current version, uninstall it, or re-install it.

A very common answer to this is to download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. Only problem is, I'm having problems running that program. I tried running it as an administrator too. The msicuu2 file gave me the 800A01B0 error.

Also, I don't have a problem downloading anything else, so don't say my computer is messed up.

Please look into this annoying issue for me! Thanks a lot!

Hi Apple friends,

Ok , I cant find out anything about this problem anywhere. It only happens in list view and only started today, although I did install itunes 9 recently and have re installed it today to try and fix the problem. Unfortunately I still have the problem.
The problem is this. When in list View I lose the Volume control at the top in fact the whole top of iTunes disappears (with the exception of anything above the left hand slide bar.(if you don't have one you don't have enough playlists)) . This means I do not have a search bar on the right hand side and do not ever know who is playing. Also on the left hand side I don't get a speaker symbol next to the track thats playing. I do in the other two views. It may have happened when I switched Genius on but I just don't know for sure.
Is there a quick fix. Have you had the same problem ? Have I messed with some simple to fix setting ?

Help with uninstall of itunes 9 vista 64 ...

I just built a new computer and installed iTunes. It installed without a clich, but when I connected my iPhone I would get an error in itunes, saying it could not connect to my iPhone because of the error "itunes cannot connect to this iphone because of a unknown error(0x8000065)". While troubleshooting the problem I noticed that I loaded the 32 bit version not the 64 bit version, so I removed itunes 32 bit version and loaded the 64bit version. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem so I started troubleshooting using apple's recommendations on their site. Well, I installed and ran the windows uninstaller program at one point and now itunes does not show up in the control panel. I called apple tech support and they suggested reloading itunes, well now it won't load and gives an error of "could not open key: UNKNOWN\components\DA...... verify that you have sufficient access to that key". But I am signed on as an administrator. Apple tech support said he couldn't help at this point and that I should contact microsoft.

Now I'm trying to uninstall itunes, but it isn't listed in the Control Panel or on the Win uninstaller program.

How can I uninstall itunes if it doesn't show up in the Control Panel?

Thanks,
Rob

If you are among the many that has the error about a dll file not found, you might want to look at this thread and try the reccomended fix (installing an update to directX).

http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10400226#10400226

But BEFORE you do, make sure you aren't already using a version of directX that is higher than that shown (click start, run, and type dxdiag then enter. this is the directX diagnostic tool built into Windows.). The link in that thread is to Microsoft's download page for updating directX9.0c and all PREVIOUS versions.

However, if you're in any way like me, and have been maintaining your computer somewhat diligently, you are already using directX version 10. This fix probably doesn't apply in this situation, and needs further analysis from both Microsoft and Apple.

Good luck! Post your results, please, so that we can all benefit and resolve this annoying error!

I just wanted to say that I absolutely, completely and totally despise it. The scrolling is much less economical than the "page change". When you search for a TV show, the results only show HD purchases and you can't even browse to the Standard format from the search results. I do not subscribe to regular tv of any kind. I purchase all of my media individually. I much prefer downloads to a physical copy. It easier, takes up less space, and leaves a smaller carbon footprint. However, purchasing used from 2nd hand resale shops is also a perfectly viable option and I have one less than 2 miles away that is fantastic.

Basicly what I mean when the store no longer loads is that at itunes start up it basicly gets the normal connecting to itunes store at the top with the loading bar it sits at 50% for about 10-20 seconds and then the bar vanishes. The Itunes store area that normaly shows the info basicly just sits white for about a min or so and then will show start showing the store section to partly load. It will have the normal menu selection's at the top like music movies ect but the actual content isnt loading correctly. At the top of the page the ad's for tv shows and movies take up the whole pane like giant banner adds and there will be about 6 or so of those then there will be smaller show images about the size of a buisness card.

Then theres a semi large gap and then individual show/music/movie listings appear basicly one show above the other all down the left side of the itunes store screen basicly it will go one item then below it is the next item these icons are about normal size as you would see on the store.

I cant seem to figure out what is going on I attempted to uninstall everything multiple times with no luck and as far as I can tell my firewall and virus scanner isnt interfearing with itunes cause I turned them off durning install/uninstall as well as running itunes in general. I tried running itunes threw my router as normal as well as directly pluged into my modem with no changes in how it loads.

I attempted to refresh my DNS threw my router and threw windows with no change and I basicly done everything else thats basicly listed in the support section that I could find that had any hint of my issue but honestly theres not a single thing listed that is related to my problem. I would post images of what is going on but I dont know how to do so on this brand of message boards so hopefully I described what was going on best I could.

OS is Windows xp Pro

Itouch and Vista64 ...

When I connect my Itouch to the computer, I can see ITunesHelper running and it starts Itunes (I can see it in the task manager) but the Itunes screen never appears. I can not manually start Itunes either. If I disconnect my Itouch, then kill Itunes from the task manager, then I can manually start Itunes.

When I manually start Itunes, I get a message that says "The registry settings used by Itunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall Itunes".

I have tried to reinstall Itunes several times with no success. I tried both a repair and remove and install and had the same problems.

I am working on a brand new Dell computer and I also had a problem with Roxio Creator Home that it did not recognize the CD/DVD drives so I had to uninstall Roxio and re-install Roxio. I think Itunes worked before I re-installed Roxio. I am not sure if installing Itunes broke Roxio or not because the first time I tried Roxio, I had already installed Itunes. Are there incompatibility issues between Roxio and Itunes? Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks

For many of us there is an error when ...

Upgrading ITUNES to version 9 ...

I upgraded Itunes to version 9. After upgrade I get an error message in a windows box: Quicktime Handler window itunes.exe unable to locate component. The application has failed to start because D3DX9_36.dll was not found.
I am running Windows Vista 64 bit.
After I click ok then Itunes open normally.

What do I do to get rid of the error message everytime I start Itunes?

Apple Application Support was not found. ...

I use Windows XP Pro.

When prompted that an update for iTunes was available (I think to 9), I went through the steps to do that. I also chose to update Quick Time; I did not chose to install Safari.
After the installation was complete (I just let it run, I did not sit at my computer and watch it), iTunes was not on my screen, only a box to reboot; I rebooted.
When I signed on, and tried to open iTunes I got the message "Apple Application Support was not found. Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again. Error 2"

The iTunes stuff is my kids accounts; I do not have an account of my own. Each kid has an account that they access through their own login account on our home computer. I do not want to loose their Libraries.
If I "uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again" won't that wipe out their Libraries? I do not want to do that unless absolutely necessary.
BUT.......when I look in the Program Directory, I do not see a Library file now. Has the file already been destroyed by the "supposed" upgrade; some upgrade!!!

I Googled the error and got information on the Apple Discussion Board that I should do the following:
1. Download and install WinRAR.
2. Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe icon and choose "Open with WinRAR".
3. Once the EXE is opened in WinRAR, double-click AppleApplicationSupport.msi and when the installer window is open choose "Repair".
4. Done! You can now run iTunes normally
I did that; problem is, there is NO "iTunesSetup.exe" file on my hard drive, so I can't even try that.

After logging in with my own Apple ID, I tied to find the thread that had this info, but could not find it.

Can anyone help my kids???

Thanks

How to keep library, radio and ...

Seems like almost everytime I upgrade itunes or iphone, I end up losing my library of music, and the radio stations and playlists I've created in the left hand column. It's become a hassle to upgrade and it will become worse when I finish importing my new music collection and set up custom playlists for our household.

Can anyone suggest a way to keep this from happening?

Thanks,

When this happens, all of Windows becomes unresponsive so that I have to manually cut power to my laptop to turn it off.

Thanks a lot!

iTunes 8.2

Hey all,

I just wanted to provide the latest updated installer pack for those of you wanting or needing iTunes 8.2 on Windows Server 2003.

This update is especially useful for those of you with an iPhone and a desire to upgrade to the newly released 3.0 firmware as this firmware update requires iTunes 8.2.

Sorry its a bit behind the firmware update even though the iTunes update was released a few days ago now, life's been... busy.

While I know we all hate reading user agreements and the like, I ask that you read all information provided from the self extracting zip file's dialog so that you understand the changes made and what risks you may or may not be taking.

Anyway the installer can be found here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/245786545/iTunes_8.2.0.23_W2K3_Installer.exe

(No longer hosting it on my home server due to bandwidth

Clean install of iTunes 9 fixes problems ...

I upgraded to iTunes 9 and immediately noticed a drop in performance:

1. The 1-click download feature (which we are now forced to use) took forever to add new songs. I mean several minutes just to add it to the download queue.

2. Downloading songs would take 20-30 minutes.

3. When songs finished downloading it would say "Processing..." and then just hand there forever.

Restarting iTunes 9 caused those songs that were processing to disappear. I finally decided to uninstall everything apple and reinstall iTunes 9. This seems to have fixed the issues that I have noted above. If you're on Windows XP. I would recommend uninstalling iTunes/Quicktime/Etc. and doing a clean install.

Pssst... Apple stop making smug commercials and fix your software.

The only reason it is an issue, is i'm pretty sure this problem is why my iphone won't upgrade/restore and gets stuck in recovery mode.

I've tried installing quicktime seperately, following the apple troubleshoot docs, uninstalling and wiping every trace of itunes from my computer but I still get this message. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks
Ryan

help with itunes on windows XP? ...

so pretty much i updated my itunes about a month ago... something happened in the installation process and now my older version itunes is now stuck, hidden in my computer with half of the newer itunes.

The file that its looking for is in that exact temp folder, itunes just wont recognise it!
