cd/dvd drive not recognized ...

within the last 9 months or so, i upgraded itunes twice. currently using 8 and will never upgrade again. i wish i hadnt in the 1st place. sometime after my first upgrade, i realized my cd/dvd drive wasnt being recognized at all but didnt link it to the upgrade. so, like a fool, i eventually upgraded to 8. after getting some annoying error mesage after the 2nd upgrade, i did some research on it. it was then that i realized my problem was quite common but i have yet to find a solution. im not very computer savy, so any complicated remedies migh as well be in japanese. i was however able to get rid of the error message by a simple download but the original problem with the drive still exists. i tried updating drivers, none available. most recently i tried something where i went into my registry and had to delete uppr and lower filters. well they werent all there in the 1st place, so i couldnt follow that any further. i tried disconnecting the drive to see if my computer would recognize new hardware. no dice

these links were the most recent ones i found and seemed to be dead on as far as my problem goes.
