Home Sharing in Itunes 9 on Windows ...

I have installed iTunes 9 and have started using Home Sharing. I want to be able to use Home Sharing with my WHS (Windows Home Server) as our music is stored there and we have iTunes on all computers, plus 2 iphones and iPods.
This would need a Home Sharing server (service) to run on the WHS. Has Apple produced such a piece of software or can I install the Home Sharing component of iTunes 9 on my server? I am advised (by Microsoft) that installing iTunes 9 is not a good idea on WHS as WHS is designed to run services not user apps.
Any suggestions or has Apple someting in plan?

iTunes 9 install issues, now iTunes ...

I tried to upgrade to iTunes 9 today but it failed to install using the auto-update tool, so as the tool suggested, I tried going manual. It installed, but gave me the "iTunes requires a newer version of Apple Mobile Device Support." error every time I plugged in my iPod Touch, and advised me to uninstall and reinstall iTunes and the Apple Mobile Device Support.

I successfully uninstalled iTunes, though the Apple Mobile Device support is being stubborn, and seems not to uninstall properly, remaining on the list of programs in the control panel.

I tried running both the manual install file (iTunes64Setup.exe) and the extracted AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi, and neither work, even though I have the AMDS service stopped in the Services panel in the control panel. The progress bar sits for a while near the finish and then rolls back, and tells me that there was an error with the install.

The error message says:

I am unable to complete the full 8.2 install on my machine - the AMDS component fails to install, although the rest of the packages go in successfully. Unfortunately, without AMDS, I can't sync' my iPhone 3G, nor my iPod.
Having broken out the AMDS package from the 8.2 installer .exe, and tried to run it separately from the command line with logging enabled, the error appears to occur while trying to install the USB drivers themselves - the relevant lines are inserted here:

I'm unable to break open the .msi fully because it is apparently 'corrupt', although that doesn't seem to stop Windows having a go. That said, the little that I can peer into it, the relevant .INF file mentioned in the log appears to be zero length.

Backing out the full install and downgrading to 8.1.1 seems to work fine, except that now MobileMe won't work because it's keyed to iTunes 8.2!!

Has anyone else seen this problem? Has anyone else got a valid AMDS .msi file I can try?!

Thanks,

Error: iTunes requires a newer version ...

Yesterday, I upgraded to iTunes 9 x64 (running Windows 7). The installation went fine and iTunes seemed to be working great until I plugged in my iPhone. When I plug it in, rather than showing up under my devices, I get an error message popping up:

I have tried to uninstall the Apple Mobile Device Support with little success and tried running the repair for the iTunes install, but I still have failure. I am worried about losing all of my iTunes data if I uninstall - I recently switched over to a different OS installation and copied my iTunes config information (XML docs and stuff) - it kept my library intact, but sneakily reset my iPhone to a way old configuration and deleted most of my data from it.

So... (1) has anyone else run into this and overcome it, and (2) how can I follow the directions uninstalling/reinstalling without losing my data, computer authorization with iTunes, etc.?

Won't sync after upgrade to 9.0 ...

My experience to-date with 9.0 has been horrible. I had to do a complete uninstall and reinstall 3 times to get the software to work. It forced me to do a restore on my iPod as it wouldn't recognize it, and I still can't get it to sync.

I went through a series of errors saying that it can't copy for unknown reasons. After searching the forums I found a workaround that cost me several songs to get it resolved. Now it gets really absurd.

When I connect, it sees my iPod and starts to sync. After completing the sync, I unplug and nothing has actually copied over. When I plug it in again, I see huge amounts of "Other" taking up space on my iPod. When it resyncs, I get the same issue with nothing being playable but when I plug in a third time, the size of "Other" has doubled.

It looks like it is copying everything to "Other" and not recognizing anything as playable.

Oh how I wish I had never upgraded...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The horror that is iTunes 9. ...

Well it seems alot of us are regretting having upgraded to iTunes 9.
We've had all manner of difficulties. I've been going through the
message bases and have seen all types of suggestion. I can assure
you though that you cannot go backwards once you've installed version 9.
If you try to you will be told that your iTunes library cannot be
access because it was made with a "newer" version of iTunes.

I've tried uninstalling it, reinstalling it. Uninstalling it and installing the components individually. (i.e.Quicktime by it self, then iTunes by itself.)
I like alot of you am almost at my wits end. I think we really have no
choice at this point other than to wait for Apple to come up with a fix.

I'm wondering, because i've not been able to locate one, if there is a
vehicle for giving feedback to Apple? A way to log errors? If so can
you point me in the right direction. I think that in giving them this
feedback can they begin to write a patch. If we, who are having these issues, can tell them the problems we're having it will go a long way in bringing
about a fix. Since I find it very unlikey that thier tech people are
going to wade through the thousands of frantic messages being posted here
trying to correct the problem.

I'm running Windows with service pack2 installed. In my case when I attempt
to open iTunes I get a dialogue box telling me that:

The instruction at "0x01dea421" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be "read".

Then I get click ok to terminate or cancel to debug. In anycase choosing either option will simply terminate the program.

Not that being said. How do we forward this info to Apple. Should we turn
to Microsoft for a patch?

iTunes and Quick Time upgrades not ...

Hi, I installed iTunes 9 this evening for my 2G iPod touch. After doing so I went to open the app from my desktop and got a message saying that the program required QuickTime 7.6.4 and that I was running 7.6.2. It told me to uninstall iTunes and reinstall iTunes 9 (which I would have thought would include the QuickTime update as well). I did this several times -- both uninstalling as well as asking it to repair damaged files (one of two options that were available) and still have the problem. I also tried to install the new iPod touch software upgrade, but it gave the the same error message and I could not proceed.

What's up? We've had three 4 iPods and the touch and I (not a technical person) have never had any problem like this on a software upgrade. I'd like to access my library, which it's not letting me get to (same error message as above)

Any ideas?

iTunes 9 disables USB ports ...

On a Dell Desktop running XP Pro, upgrading from iTunes 8 to iTunes 9 caused my Logitech cordless keyboard to stop working. When I looked in device manager, two USB Receivers have yellow asterisks. This also happened in the past when I tried to upgrade from iTunes 8.0 to 8.higher (1 or 2).

Is there a known fix for this or do I need to restore an image to before I upgraded to iTunes 9? Thank you.

Upgrade to iTunes 9 stops Windows 7 Boot ...

I'm running iTunes on the Windows 7 RC, 32 bit. The iTunes 9 upgrade (including the iPod support software) runs correctly until it asks me to restart the PC. After the restart Windows stops booting at the "Starting Windows" screen, before the Windows logo appears.

On a second reboot Windows recognises the problem, and attempts to return to a previous system restore point. Any reboots after this will fail with a completely black screen.

I've restored the PC to a backup from June, let Windows update put the current security patches on, and repeated the iTunes upgrade with exactly the same results. Any ideas?

Can't install iTunes 9.0 ...

I have tried on several occasions to upgrade to iTunes 9.0 on my laptop (Vista Home Premium) and each time it stops at a certain point - a different point each time. I have tried installing it both by going through the Apple website and downloading it through the upgrade bit in iTunes.
Do I need to un-install the old version first, before installing the new version?

iTunes has encountered a problem and ...

After upgrading to iTunes9.0 I can no longer use the application. Everytime I try to open it I get an error message that iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I've deleted it and re-installed following all the troubleshooting steps in various FAQ documents. I've disconnected from the internet and re-connected. I've completely removed iTunes and QuickTime from my PC. I've changed out IE handles cookies. I've changed audio output to headphone speakers. I've stopped Apple Moblie services. I've cleaned out Windows Installer. I feel like I've tried everything. I'm at a total loss.

The program installed properly and will open. It immediately tries to connect to the iTunes Store. The progress bar at the top shows 1/2 complete when the error message pops up.

Any suggestions?

Installed v.9 and now my speakers don't ...

After installing iTunes, my audio doesn't work on the PC, whether it's in iTunes or YouTube or any other app. Ugh -- help! I get the following message upon starting iTunes:
"iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration.
Audio/Video playback may not operate properly."

Any ideas? Should I restore Windows to before updating iTunes?

Loss of authorization after new version ...

How come after every new version update, my computer loses its iTunes authorizations? After every, and i mean every, new iTunes version update, the computer authorization is lost and I am presented with the choice of Erasing and Syncing my Ipod with the new library, which is empty because the new version install can't seem to find the previous version library; or i can Transfer the purchases from my iPod to the computer and re-establish the library and hopefully the authorizations.

Now this is a serious inconvience and should not be happening. So I ask again...Why does this happen and why doesn't Apple fix it?

iTunes/Quicktime installation went off ...

Hi Friends,

A few days back I had posted a query wanting to know if iTunes v9 works fine on Win XP SP2 or not. 1 guy said that it may or may not work. But guess what, everything went perfect and smooth, which was totally unexpected. I was on iTunes v6.0.2.23 and was apprehensive about upgrading directly to v9. I tried upgrading to v8 long time back but that failed miserably. But v9 installation went smooth, heres how :

I had Quicktime in my PC and I figured out that it was corrupted. Quicktime wont open (eventhough iTunes v6 did). So I thought of fixing the existing version of Quicktime first. I had Quicktime version 7.0.4 installed in my computer. Somehow it never showed up in Add/Remove programs so I wasnt able to remove it. So I went to www.oldversion.com and downloaded the old version (i.e. 7.0.4) of Quicktime. This installer file first allowed me to uninstall the corrupted version and then let me install the good version of 7.0.4 Quicktime.
After this, I found that Quicktime now worked perfectly on my computer. So I went ahead and downloaded the latest version of iTunes Quicktime and installed it. And guess what, my 5 yr old Windows XP Pentium 4 - 384 MB of Ram now runs iTunes v9.0.0.70 and Quicktime v7.6.4.

My Review :

Quicktime :

Though the player looks sleek, it is still incompatible in playing most video file formats. It does not recognize a simple 'wmv' file, does not play 'avi' file, though it suggested me to download some codecs to play 'avi' files. But why would I do that anyways..? I have VLC which plays almost everything. All audio files work good in Quicktime and MPEG-4 video playbacks are awesome.

iTunes :

Wow, this latest version of iTunes is a complete boon. There is so much to do with this new version. I am totally amazed with its added Grid view and CoverFlow view. iTunes DJ is another added advantage. Who needs a professional DJ when you have iTunes with you ? iTunes v9 was quick enough to retrieve the entire Library and my playlists from v6 and within minutes I was back to my music and videos with an all look on my new iTunes. Both audio files and video files work perfectly fine in this new version, just like it did with my old version. All good things bring some bad things with them too. This new version is too much bothered about Album Artworks and asks me to update them which is irritating. And the Genius function does not work for me since I am in India and India does not have an online iTunes store yet.

**P.S.:**I am not an Apple marketing expert or an Apple employee, the review I mentioned is totally original and my personal opinion about iTunes and Quicktime. I just though of sharing my personal experience with you guys. So please dont kill me over it. Thanks and cheers !

Library lost ...

Hello. Maybe someone can help. I upgraded to 9.0, and all seemed ok. Except now. When I close Itunes, then reopen, my entire library is gone. I get the legal screen, then itunes opens and nothing is there. I have to add ALL my songs over again, movies and podcasts. Anyone else have this, or know of a fix yet?

Does iTunes v9 install/work on Windows ...

Hi Friends,

I am currently using iTunes v6 and its high time that I upgrade my existing software of the same. I tried upgrading to v7 in the past but I got some errors which kept me from upgrading the software further. Well here are some of my queries :

Does iTunes v9 install and work properly in Window XP SP 2 ?

I have also heard that people are facing several issues while upgrading, so some of you may suggest to completely remove the existing version of iTunes from my computer and install from scratch. So here goes the other query :

Well if I uninstall iTunes from my machine I know for sure that I wont lose my music since its on my hard drive, but the question is, Will I lose my playlists that I had created in iTunes ? I guess I would lose the play counts of my music too ? And if I lose that, it would be difficult to drag and drop songs which I had been doing for adding my favourite tracks for years now.

So what do you guys suggest ? Shall I simply go ahead and install the latest version over the existing version or do I completely remove the existing version before installing the new one ?

I tried upgrading last night and it said that it was successfully upgraded but when I tried to open iTunes it said that it couldn't open it because it was either not compatible with windows or that it contained an error. And that it wasn't installed correctly and to install again. So I tried to install it like 4 times. And this morning I removed iTunes and reinstalled it and it's still saying the same thing. iTunes folder not found ...

"The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, sic and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "My Music" folder."

Of course the directory is there, but that does not help

I started seeing this when I launch iTunes (V9) and have removed and installed everything. I searched the file system and removed all directories / files I could find related to Apple between the removal and the re-install including the XML files in the Application Data folders. I stopped short of raping the registry.

Anyone have a hint?

Program Icons Have Changed ...

I'm not entirely sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I just updated to iTunes 9. Everything went fine except all of my program icons became that of iTunes. Unfortunately, they no longer function as shortcuts to their respective programs and, instead, just open up iTunes. I would go through each program one by one if it weren't for the fact that the changes don't take effect. In addition to that, it looks as if each shortcut has become a .lnk file.

I'm hoping somebody has a solution to revert each program to what it was before the update, otherwise it looks as if I'm going to have to do a system restore. = /

"Itunes was not properly installed. ...

I downloaded version 9 only to have the following error message displayed:

"Itunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn CDs, you need to reinstall iTunes."

although it accepted an audio book. It did not offer the facility to correctly sort the tracts numerically and as a consequence I could not listen toi the book in sequence.

Attempting to reinstall the download still displayed the same error message and also had the audio book loaded.

This is completely useless. I am being inundated by e-mails offering the new and wonderful Nano which is not worth a red cent if the software will not work.

How and when will I be able to once again obtain full benefit from my Nano

Moving iTunes from old computer to new ...

Hi,

what happens if I just perform a fresh installation of iTunes on a new computer and attach my iPhone to it? Will it completely wipe the phone? From my understanding a device is tied to one iTunes installation so it cannot be synched with any different ones.

In this case I guess I would have to move the old iTunes installation to the new computer. Can I just copy the whole folder of the old installation and overwrite the one from the fresh installation? Or are there also some settings in the Windows registry that need to be migrated as well?

Thanks
